So we had our 20 weeks checkup today and also got the results of the ultrasound we had two weeks ago. 99.9% of everything looked just great!!! The visualized everything critical like the cerebellum, spine, stomach, umbilicol cord, nose, lips, arms, legs, hands, feet, etc. Here are some of her stats (too small for weight though):
Head circumference: 163 mm
Biparietal diameter (head side to side): 45 mm
Abdominal circumference: 144 mm
Femur Length: 30 mm
Humerous Length: 28 mm
Based on these the estimated gestational age was 19 weeks 4 days, which means that since she was 18 weeks and 4 days at the ultrasound that she is actually measuring 1 week big. Doctor said that is absolutely nothing to be concered about - that it likely means that she is going to be tall (No surprise at all give either of our families)!
Now for the slightly less good news... the only anomaly they found during the ultrasound is that she has slightly enlarged kidneys, both right and left. This is called fetal pelviectasis In general this can mean 2 things... 1. it can be a soft marker (indicator) for chromosomal abnormalities. We can basically dismiss this being an issue because of the strongly negative results of my integrated screens that test for such things which are very accurate (God I love technology) and 2. it can be an indication of issues like blockage within the kidneys - which process urine which in turn she uses to produce and refresh her amniotic fluid. Dr McMahon reassured us that she sees this reasonably frequently (statistically it is found in 1-3% of these ultrasounds) and most of the time the issue corrects itself before the baby is even born or shortly after and it is typically in only 1 in 500 cases of this that turns severe enough that requires surgery after birth to correct. It is even possible that it was just a bad measurement on the ultrasound - we are talking tenth of millimeters! So, because he kidney enlargement was very mild (just over the borderline) the only course of action we take is to do a follow-up ultrasound at 28 weeks. We are doing our best not worry, but that is easier said than done! a good friend of ours had this with her baby girl and everything was fine at the second ultrasound.
All and all, while I wish that everything had shown up perfect on the ultrasound, I certainly don't mind having another in 8 weeks just to see my lil' girl again!
